Massive news coming out of Caravella HQ today with the confirmation of bonafide football superstars Shane Smeltz and Patrick Zwaanswijk as guest coaches for the Advanced Camp in Cairns this April.
Recently retired striker Smeltz boasts a long list of achievements including two-time Hyundai A-League Golden Boot, Johnny Warren Medalist, Oceania Player of the Year, a spot in the A-League team of the decade, Wellington Phoenix Player of the Year and with 55 appearances for the All Whites, he was the first A-League player to ever score in a World Cup for New Zealand.
Dutch-born defender Zwaanswijk spent 11 great seasons in the top flight of Dutch football, coming through the famed Ajax Academy (even taking home an Ajax player of the year award in 1998) and then with mega clubs FC Utrecht and NAC Breda. He spent the last few years of his career with the Central Coast Mariners taking home the prized Alex Tobin award as well as being part of the Championship winning squad in 2012/13.
Both Smeltz and Zwaanswijk will join our own Zenon Caravella to guest coach at our one-day advanced camp, further offering participating players – many of them regional – a unique opportunity to not only be coached by genuine football legends but true positional specialists. These types of opportunities rarely come around in regional towns and to have so much experience on one patch of grass is truly priceless.
Of the addition of Smeltz and Zwaanswijk to this innovative event combining advanced training with a 7v7 tournament, Head Coach Zenon says:
“Having played with Smeltzy in a successful Gold Coast United team for two years, I have witnessed first hand the magic he can conjure up from nothing. He is the epitome of a clinical striker.
“As for Zwaanswijk, while I never played with him, I played against him many times and as a defender he was always a very tough competitor, an extremely clever player and a fantastic leader on the field. He was an integral part of the Championship winning Mariners team at the time.
“But the best part about having Smeltzy and Patrick involved in our camp is that they, like me, both have a passion for youth development, with Patrick having been involved in junior football in the Central Coast for the last few years and Smeltzy only just retiring to start new chapter in coaching.
“I’m excited to get back on the pitch with them this April for what is shaping up to be a massive event for junior football in Cairns.”
